Graduation

It's a time of joy and yet we will miss getting to see our seniors of 2007 every day. They have been great contributors to the Pirate bands for many years. You will be missed!

If you are exempt from testing or can arrange to be there, graduation practice is at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, May 18. The 8th grade band students will be joining with the HS band. We should finish practicing about 11:45.

Friday evening band students need to be in their seats at 7:00 for graduation at 7:30. This is a crowded night getting into the parking lot and gym. Don't try to show up at the last minute. We will move equipment as soon as the ceremony is over. I think we will be through by 9:30 P.M. or so. This is a great tribute to get to play for our graduating seniors so let's all make our best effort!

District Band Contest

Wow! I just finished listening to the recording of the Pirate Concert Band's performance at District 7 band contest at Konawa. The band really played well. Our flutes were beautiful, the clarinets rich, the saxophones mello, our trumpets well blended, the trombone and baritones sonorous, our tubist accurate and our percussion tasteful. The band members should be very proud of their performance.

The band received two ratings of Excellent (II) and one rating of Superior (I) for their performance on stage. In the sight-reading contest we received a rating of Excellent (II). These are very good marks and are in fact the exact same ratings that the Pirate Band earned last year. We were one superior rating away from qualifying for the State Band Contest.

Our next performance is our concert at BHS on March 12. We have new music to begin learning right away.

Congratulations Pirates!

District Solo & Ensemble Results

Saturday was a great day at District Solo & Ensemble contest in Shawnee. Matthew Lindsey, Samantha Spears, Buck Roberson, Justin Frazier, Sarah Jones, Jessica Painter, Michael Lindsey and Clint Humphers received highest ratings of Superior (I) on their solos. Tiffany Vogt, Samantha Spears, Lori Coats, Blake Barnes, Will Bailey, Cody Williams, Gabby Fowler and Garrett Thompson received highest ratings of Superior (I) on their ensembles. Steven Vekony, Blake Barnes, Blake Loy received ratings of Excellent (II) on their solos and Nathan Enns received a rating of Good (III) on his solo.

Matthew L, Samantha S, Tiffany V, Lori C and Blake B qualified for the OSSAA State Music Contest at OSU in April.

Our preparation for this contest was delayed due to the snow and fire days so these accomplishments are very commendable. I am quite sure we would have had many more students participate if we had not missed the week of class in January.

Congratulations to all!

Wednesday, February 28, the high school concert band performs at District Band Contest at Konawa High School. Our band plays at 1:00 P.M. This is the most important competition of our year and the students are preparing well. We perform two pieces of music on stage and then we go to sight-reading contest. Parents are welcome to view the performance in the auditorium but are not allowed in the sight-reading room. We should return to school by 3:15 Wednesday afternoon.

Some of our High School & Junior High band students will be participating in the District Solo and Ensemble contest this Saturday at OBU in Shawnee. We will load the bus at 11:00 Saturday morning. Students may leave with their parents after they have played and their ratings are posted. We will stop for fast food on the way home about 5:30. We should be back to Byng about 7:00 P.M.

Next Monday evening, the 26th, we have a opportunity to hear a great performance. The ECU Band will have a concert at 7:30 P.M. in the Dorothy Summers Theater at the university. We will take a bus at 6:30 P.M. but if you would rather meet us there that is fine. We should be back at Byng by 9:15 or so. Admission is free.
